I would be happy to sell them. My being one guy doing all the work myself, it would be special order item. I would get half the cost up front and the remaining just prior to shipping it. Pm me if you are actually interested and I will walk you thru what I did.

I am looking for information and ideas on how to securely and safely carry an extra 3 gallons of fuel while exploring backroads ...
The approach I like best is Rotopax Tailgate Mount, such as this one for the JK (https://rotopax.com/var/images/product/1000.1000/IMG_6131.jpg). Unfortunately, Rotopax does not have one for the JL nor do they have an ETA available.
I was searching for the exact same thing, and arrived at the same conclusion. Since they don’t offer a JL model this is the third thing on my list to build after the dash mount bar and roll bar mount system...

I installed the Mopar tailgate reinforcement kit because I figured if I add 4+ gallons of gas in a carrier that’s going to be another 35 pounds or so hanging off the back hinges. That reinforcement kit actually has threaded bolt holes specifically for adding something like this, so I’m going to fabricate something resembling the Rotopax Tailgate Mount that will bolt directly to these spots (covered by plugs in the photo below).

Anyway, I’m going to create a prototype this week, so I’ll share some photos when I get something together that actually works.

The problem is, if you don’t have the Mopar reinforcement kit, it will require a different mounting method - one that probably uses the factory hinge bolts, and that creates all sorts of complexity because of having to find appropriately larger bolts to replace the factory ones, plus some way to keep the bracket from scratching the hell out of everything. But let me figure out one problem at a time...

This is what I did:

I created a reserve gas tank that holds about 4 gallons of gas. It sits nicely up under the body between the frame rails. It’s set up so that it automatically fills with each fill up. If the main tank runs out of gas I can pump gas from the reserve to the main tank by a fuel pump that is activated by one of the auxiliary switches on the dash. I also put in a “Stahlbus Drain Valve” so I can pull gas directly from the tank if I need to transfer it to another vehicle or just need access to gas. Attached are a few pictures of the setup.

Spent some time today working on the RotoPax mounting system so I can carry a couple 2 gallon tanks with me on the road. Here's how things are progressing so far.

Here's a little 3D model of the design:

Here's what it looks like in real life.

It can hold a single 2 gallon can...

Or two of them.

And here's generally how it will mount on the Jeep.

I need to work on some more fitment issues with how it physically mounts, as well as getting the correct bolts to hold it in place. But I think it's showing a lot of promise.

I haven't been able to mount and test it yet, but in theory with one tank the door should open unimpeded, and with two tanks it should open about 98% of the way, but probably end up with a tank touching the light. We'll see once I get it installed.

Thanks. Sorry, I forgot to post any updates, but I've got the carrier pretty much nailed down now. I really like it a lot, but there are a few caveats:
  1. This carrier works specifically with the Mopar door reinforcement kit.
  2. It will work with UP TO Rubicon stock tire/wheel size combos. So Basically 33", but no larger.
  3. With two tanks loaded, if you open the door all the way it will push a little bit on the brake light cover.
Obviously, if I slim it down to a single tank carrier it would accommodate a larger spare, and /or not touch the light. But right now I've got it basically set up to balance between maximum capacity and perfect fitment. I just make sure I'm not letting the door swing open hard into the light with tanks on it, and it works fine.

So that's the update. I can produce these for sale for $149 (plus shipping) for anyone who meets the criteria above. Not sure how many people this works for, because you need the door reinforcement without upsizing the tires.

so far i like it seem very secure probably going to mount the maxtracks and shovel on the other side bracket
do you have pictures of what this would look like? Or could you post them when you have it completed?

Yes please post image of the traction boards mounted. I'm trying to find a way to mount some on my 2 door. Without a roof rack, or blocking the rear back up camera, or buying a new bumper or tire carrier.

the traction boards stick out past the back of the hard top and i dont like that so i found shorter ones the Tred 800 that will fit and not stick out the back but i have not bought them yet.

I built these two "tubs" to hold 2x 5 gallons water and 2x 5 gallon jerry cans for the roof rack. The jerry cans had a strap over them like the water does. Drove 2500 miles and lots of trails like this.
