I think what doesn't look right is the relatively low amount of damage to the Jeep outside for hitting something at 60 mph. Like mentioned the theory is that had the front of the Jeep crumpled completely it would have absorbed more energy and thus less energy would have been transferred inside to OP's wife.I will respectfully disagree. If an accident like this happened 20-40 years ago, my guess (just a quess) is it could very well be fatal. The driver was hurt, but managed to walk away and sounds like will make a full recovery. I'm not sure how this is a failure on Jeep? The driver lived without very serious complications. This is a win as far as I'm concerned.
