The smoke is not hurting anything at all.
If you are operating your car at that angle, the issue is oil pressure, not EGR gasses. The lack or proper oil circulation WILL do damage, where as some smoke out the back just stinks a bit.

While lite brite are entertaining, it is worth mentioning that they are HEAVILY sponsored. All their "reviews" are from sponsored products and it is always... oh.. we cannot live without "insert sponsor". Or, "insert sponsor" is the best and you HAVE to have this on your Jeep.
Yeah I'd love to break shit on my Jeep and not worry about it lol... Thanks again for your knowledge. Now, if anyone needs ideas on decals or "pretty shinies" I got you covered.

Different stage of process. It is outside of the oil filtration system and feedback into the combustion cycle. Admittedly, I am a electrical engineer and not a mechanical engineer.
However there does not seem to be a single bit of scientific testing which would actually validate the use of a catch can. Engines are designed with those vapors in mind. Engines today are so much better than in the 70's-90's. Back in those days, you expected stuff to break. You took extra parts with you on trips. I had belts, plugs, distributor caps, a starter and various other bits and bobs when I went off roading.
Now, if anything at all breaks it's a big deal. And thats because generally speaking, newer cars so so damn reliable.
If you could transport a 2018 Wrangler to 1970, people would say it is clearly the most reliable car that ever existed.
Hmmm. seems I am going on a tangent.
So.. No.. nothing to do with the oil filter and there is literally no reason to get one. Unless you enjoy adding random complexity and failure nodes to you engine.

The insight is certainly appreciated. It's more information than what I woke up with today. I'm not smart enough to doubt anything you've mentioned, but how would this explain the junk people with the cans are finding?

I'm debating the seemingly minor effort of adding a catch can (really now... $150?), but I'm looking for some clarity on its merits vs. what may be a waste of money. Some also question the necessity considering the mention of direct injection.

I'll eventually start changing my oil on my own and I'd like to know how often you should check the can for debris.

Reading thru the threads, I've seen the pics of the gunk this thing traps & it looks kinda icky.

If you have one, and go to the dealer for for an oil change... what, if any, effect would this have on warranty?

I know there are detractors & proponents, but is this truly a waste of money?

There's an older thread on this from July of last year, but it hasn't gotten any traction since Jan 27.

To me, the catch can is a long view kind of mod. If I can keep oil out of my intake over a hundred thousand miles, the intake and valves will be cleaner as a result. There's been some people claiming increased gas mileage since the oil can reduce the effective octane level, but I'm not sure how much of that is accurate. I plan on super charging my Jeep, so a catch can is a must IMO before that. You can easily find articles/videos saying they are necessary, and saying they are a waste. For me, it's about keeping oil out of my intake.

This video has some good visuals for the need of a catch can on a FI application on the 3.6

This!

I'm by no means an expert, but I did install a catch can. In just a few hundred miles, oil starts accumulating in the can. Are they necessary? Probably not. I have put many miles on every vehicle I have ever owned, including 300,000 on a Honda CRV, and this is the first time I have ever installed a catch can on anything. But after seeing what the can does catch, keeping that out of the intake has to be a good thing. So for those that say it's a waste, it may very well be, but emptying a catch can at every oil change literally takes about 15 seconds....so what does it hurt?

I might have to take you up on that offer, the only "mods" I've done to my JL (so far anyway) are completely cosmetic!

For me, cosmetic all the way! A stock Sport will take me anywhere I want to do. I'm just waiting on warmer weather to get my decals on. Maybe plastidip my key holes and emblems.

As someone who has pulled several intake manifolds off and let them drain out upside down I can say all the oil that accumulates in there is not a good thing. I have had it literally 'pool' inside of every manifold I took off, and one car only had 15k miles on it. Definitely not something that is necessary but I can't imagine it not hurting the overall performance of the engine.

I would think that with modern engines and modern synthetic oils, the benefits on a catch-can would be negligible, at best. Pretty sure that 3.6 will be good for a couple hundred thousand miles and it is super unlikely that its failure mode will have been prevented by using such a system.
In my view, in a modern system the only thing it adds is additional complexity.
Furthermore, it will almost certainly void your warranty. With a diesel, it for sure void the warranty.
Perhaps you could win in a courtroom against Jeep on a warranty claim, but why go through hassle for no tangible benefit?

Here is an entertaining video on the subject. Many of his other videos are also quite informative and entertaining.
Catch can porn... very informative. Thank you for this... it's certainly helpful.

The nasty shit that accumulates in mine is thick and smells like oil and gas. I do normal driving 15 miles interstate and 15 regular roads a day. My engine seems to run smoother. I would not want this nasty stuff in my engine, especially if I can prevent it. Worth the $150!

Ok, but how does it taste? I'm kidding.

There's a lot of useful information here, and I've learned that there's more to this than I thought... the videos were extremely helpful, and humor is always appreciated.

Retired but working with benefits.

.... but a Rubicon will bring you back. :)

Sorry, had to write that before someone else did. We LOVE our Sport !!! Now to tie that statement back into the thread, if we were rock crawling the catch can would be a must have if for no other reason than to prevent embarrassing smoking at extreme angles. It's hard to do impressive climbs if no one can see ya!

Our off roading is mostly national forest roads. For that we don't need a catch can. Or lockers. Or a lift kit. Or even a Jeep for that matter, but it's so much more FUN in a Jeep.

In all fairness...let's be honest....if you were able to travel around the U.S. trying out different trails, were sponsored by some really good companies (after all...they don't have junk on their Jeep), and were able to have it paid for by simply backing their product...many on the forum would do the same in a heartbeat. So you can't fault them for that.

And to be honest, there are several things (not everything) they have added that I have on my "wishlist"...not because they say "you have to have this on your Jeep," but because you get to see these products in action on the trail.

Just my opinion.
