Ok, here's the deal:

I've been wanting a Jeep for AGES, and I think now is the time to bite the bullet.

I live in Southern California and I've narrowed it down to the JLUR Rubicon that I love. What I'm looking for is any input on the deal that I've worked so far.

2018 JL Unlimited Rubicon MSRP $51,215, Invoice $48,296 - Current pricing negotiated: $46,981. Do you guys think there is any or much room for further negotiation?

Secondly, I will be financing the vehicle and will possibly be trading in my current 2013 Toyota Prius C. They are offering me $5500 for it which is on the high end of the KBB trade in value. I'm thinking of selling the car instead (it is paid off). Similar cars are going for ~$8k-$9k on Auto trader. Thoughts on buying the Jeep, financing the whole shehbang and then tossing the profits from the Prius to the finance company?

Thanks all, and I know that this will be the first post of many!

What is the invoice price for your build? How much below are you getting? If you are in SoCal as me, I would recommend to deal with Jim Marsh in Las Vegas. Tell them you saw in the forums. Straightforward competitive pricing. Then take your Prius to Carmax, get a quote and decide what you want to do with. Good luck.

Hi There! So I recently just placed an order and was going through a lot of the same questions as you.

I am also located in Souther California - Los Angeles. This is a terrible place for negotiating sales. So many affluent people in this area, the dealers get enough people that don't waste time to negotiate and just pay the sticker price, it makes them very stingy to make deals. I called dozens and dozens of dealers when I was shopping for my Rubi. I finally ended up ordering from Jim Marsh in Vegas because SoCal dealers suck so much.

If you're talking about a 2018, that's sitting on the lot, especially the Unlimited, you should be pushing the dealer to drop their price even more. We are in 2019, the dealers are receiving 2019s, so I think you should push them harder if you're goin to take a 2018 off their hands. Thats my opinion. The longer that thing sits, the less appealing to customers it becomes. Everyone will want a 2019.

To give you frame of reference, I just ordered my 2019 2-door Rubicon, fairly loaded. My MSRP was 49,000. Invoice was 46,185. Jim Marsh in Vegas does a flat rate deal of 5% below invoice pricing for orders with them. My sale price at 5% off invoice is 43,875.

In my opinion, if you can not get AT LEAST 5% below invoice on one sitting on a lot, especially a 2018. I would do a factory order with Jim Marsh. Get exactly what you want.

Regarding the trade-in. Dealerships will never give you even close to as much as you can get through private sale. If you can manage it, I would finance the whole thing (minus any downpayment you can afford) and then put your car on craiglist and sell it yourself. This is what I'm doing. I've never done a trade-in because you lose so much value. They're called "stealerships" for a reason ;) Then take the money and throw it at the premium and get it paid off as quickly as you can.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide. Cheers.

FYI - on your numbers - your current deal is at 2.7% under invoice. So almost half the savings you could get with a factory order through the place I ordered. In my opinion that's a crappy deal for a 2018.

Here's a whole thread of SoCal people who have ordered like I did. Very helpful thread for me.

For sure more room for discount. I'd sell the Prius privately for the extra $3k or so if you have the time.

There is more room. Others are getting ~12-13% off MSRP pretty easily. You are complicating things with your trade.

Ended to getting it for another $700 of, not a steal but a great deal in my opinion! Didn't do the trade as I'll sell it outright. Things all for your assistance and I look forward to what is to come!

Yep, wouldn't call 10% off MSRP a bad deal. And a Prius shouldn't be too difficult to sell private party I'd imagine, although harder in states where private sales have tax.

Not so. Make your deal. Then tell them you want to trade your old car. I’ve done this several times. Selling a car privately is a PIA. And it takes time. I got NADA low retail for my CRV (which was fairly decent since I expected a lowball wholesale offer). So that came right off the price of the Jeep. But to each their own. And of course this only works when you’re willing to walk away.

There are several threads here about getting best price when ordering.

Remember there may be tax implications of buying and selling separately versus trading. Depending on the value of the vehicle and auto tax in your state it could be similar to a private sale.

Not a bad deal but not any better than what you can get on a 2019. Yes, the 2019's a little more but the 2018 has already depreciated substantually

Yes, but that's not what he did. Thus he was complicating it with his trade. Your advice is correct, but he already played his card. Of course there are other dealerships :) I hate selling private party.... it sucks. Prius is easier -- done that without issue before (sold it in a week and had 3 people all with cash trying to buy it). Everything else was always a headache. If price point is low enough, the market is big enough that it's easy to find a buyer here in PHX for a car like that.

I think you did great...

Demand is high in So Cal... sure you can pressure for another 1-2k... but your in the ball park.. besides this is a long term purchase and the relationship with the dealer is super important...

I dumped Crown dodge due to 20 years of crap and sales guys that don't follow up and jerk you around...

Shaver in TO is awesome... Kenny in part (offroad specialist) is second to none... Sales guys.. no nonsense, get to the point.. and very competitive, I shopped 10 + dealers, they won out...

If time is more important than $, you will appreciate Shaver Jeep in TO.. I know you bought yours already.. but just doing a plug for dealers that treat people right..

Look forward to tagging up someday!

I actually went through Shaver about 20 years ago to buy a Firebird back in their Jeep/Pontiac/Eagle days! Unfortunately they were being stubborn in pricing which I'm sure had to do with my timing (beginning of year, beginning of month).
