Just took mine in to the dealer for the first oil change with 3200 miles and they said 5K or 6 months. They almost weren't going to take it (under the free oil changes) but I met the 6 months.

Today, when talking oil change to a young guy, I realized I should have mentioned the following in this thread when I posted a few days ago..

Anyway.... IMPORTANT.........

When doing your oil change, the oil filter housing cap must be removed. It is a good idea to get into the habit of removing the old filter housing cap and the old filter first and then go under and remove the oil pan drain plug.

Give it say a minute or so before you place the oil filter housing cap with new oil filter back on.

Do know that removing the oil filter housing cap releases oil held within the oil filter cavity and allows it to drain down, into the sump.

IF you don't remove the oil filter housing cap prior to reinstalling the oil pan, drain plug you will not allow complete draining of the old engine oil.

@Wrangles

I have posted on the forum often, in regard to the Pennzoil rebate. Actually just did another rebate a week ago before the rebate was no longer being offered.

Well, no longer offered if you go by this on the rebate form at the Pennzoil website: Offer period is July 1, 2018 through September 30, 2018.

Hopefully, Pennzoil will renew this rebate as they have renewed it in the past.

.
Well, Pennzoil extended their rebate offer!!

im 30% and 5,000 miles in
is this normal?
@Dennis23d

I suggest you go by actual miles driven on your JL. I would not lets say trust the Oil Life readout.

Do your oil changes as per the manual's recommendations................ or do oil changes earlier then recommended, based on what you feel is what you want to do.

Dunno for sure, but I'll bet the oil life readout is based (at least in part) on engine hours rather than miles driven.

Eh. I wasn’t worried because of the synthetic oil. I finally took mine in and the dealer wasn’t worried and didn’t say anything about it. But they gave me the sticker for it to be changed every 6k miles. But I go by the oil life and will change it around 10-15%. So I think your good but would take it in whenever you get the chance. No worries

Instead of changing your oil early on a new vehicle, all really need to change is just the oil filter, and add some replacement oil. The oil quality isn't going to change.

As for the oil weight, what do they call for in exported models of the JL Jeep w/the same engine(s)?

My first oil change was at 5300 miles, after driving 5000 miles from SC to Washington.

By now I'm back, and at 10300, and the gauge says 52%, so I figure I'll wait a while longer to do the second one.

@echris

Suggest you base your oil change regimen on mileage since last oil change, verses the oil life indicator.

My first oil change was at 2,000. My next oil change will be at 5,500 and then 10,000 and then every 5000 miles after that. This schedule allows me to look at the odometer and immediately know when my next oil change is. I'm a big believer in break-in oil. It may be overkill but I'm taking advantage of the free oil changes and I plan to keep the Jeep for a long time.

Hello everyone, I'm a new guy here but not new to the Jeep products and have had about a dozen since 1976. I agree with Biscuit in respect that if you follow the recommendations of your owners manual, "Jeep" cannot hold you liable for your oil changes. "Save the receipts" in a folder, glove box or anywhere you can get to them. I also have a log book where I log mileage of every oil change. I am retired US Coast Guard Chief and worked with, on diesels for many years. I've done many oil analysis on many different engines over the years and read many different opinions. None bad, but always remember, the fresher the oil the better the protection. It's just that simple. I just came home with a new JL Unlimited on the 22nd of this month. and I will do my first oil change at 500 miles, for break in, then 5000 miles there after. I've done much research finding the MS-6395 FCA rated oil and will follow the owners manual to the letter on the specs. After warranty, I will change to a 5W30 synthetic. I have contacted Lucas oil, Royal Purple and a few others via e-mail asking about the MS-6395 rating and will they complete testing for the certification., I have not recieved a response back yet. Oils have came leaps and bounds since when I first started driving in the 70's and lead in fuel was also a major destroyer/contamiator of oil.
We do not drive in "severe conditions" and our JL will be driven 90% by my wife to and from work.
Now, most synthetic oils under normal conditions can go 10,000 miles easy and frankly oils and oil changes are all about the money game$$$. Unless oil is getting fuel diluted and is driven at "normal" operating temperatures, oils can go a long time. "Im not saying don't change your oil". Tractor trailer diesels don't stop every 10,000 miles to change oil! Ships generators go a couple thousand hours before oil changes. For the record, I had a 1996 Cherokee 4.0 with 227,000 miles, had never been apart exept minor things, "water pump, thermostat, valve cover gasket, etc" I changed oil in that every 5000 miles with Castrol Syn blend, I sold it to a kid in 2008 who drove it back and forth from NJ to Kentucky several times a year and as far as I know it's still going! Sorry for being long winded and I know this is my first post but I joined to get information on the JL and appreciate all the folks here for input, learning is a great thing no matter how old you get! Have a great day everyone!

For any young guy or gal that is going to start doing their own oil changes, I want to recommend a little something that I have had for years and geeeez, it is a pleasure to use/have.

I have recommended it to other's who have acquired one and all those say they too really like it..

Well made and will last you until you are very very old... 8-)

After hearing about dealerships putting in 6 qts instead of 5. I'm curious, does it hurt the engine to drive it with 1 qt too much ?
