Here is a quick review of the Rhino Rack (Maximus-3 brackets) for the JL. Not a step by step install but covers the high points:

you mention the hard top is still removable. the brackets stay on? are they obtrusive? Is it relatively easy to remove/reinstall the hard top once the bottom bolts are removed?

Yes it is, with the removal of the two nuts/bolts that hold the top and bottom parts of the brackets together. You can leave the brackets on or actually remove the lower ones in the back easy enough. The hardtop comes off the same way with the rack attached. Next time I take the top off I’ll snap some pics.

My favorite is to run doorless and without the freedom panels and leave the top on, that way I have use of the rack if needed.
