Just be sure to mention to the Service Writer to note your work order that only 5 qts. of oil are to be used!

.
Good advice. Lots of people are still unaware that the JL uses the PUG engine, unlike the JK which was also produced at the same time.

Color is irrelevant, and unless you hail from the planet Krypton or you've figured out a way to analyze the chemical composition and suspended particulates with the naked eye, it's impossible. Really.

Or you could pay Blackstone to analyze samples for you.
So, you're saying the oil could change color for a reason other than capturing wear materials and breaking down chemically itself?

C'mon man...everybody knows that the oil goes dark because it's becoming more and more contaminated with wear metals, chemicals, and thermal breakdown. This isn't rocket science. The water in your washing machine looks different 5 minutes after you turn it on too. I guess this has nothing to do with the dirt coming out of your clothes?

To get back on topic.. I changed my oil filter at 2,500 miles and then had my first service done at the dealership for free at 5,000 miles. Have three more free oil changes remaining. Nobody should pass up on free synthetic oil changes.

Other than warranty work and the 4 free services I donā€™t plan on going to dealers for anything else. I was surprised they charge about $100 for a rotation and oil change. My Honda dealer is less than $50 for full synthetic. But the Jeep dealer wanted almost $80.
Hello mdelzer,

Regarding on when to service your vehicle please follow this link https://www.mopar.com/en-us/my-garage/select-vehicle.html . Here you will be able to access the ownerā€™s manual for your vehicle. Page 429 begins to talk about the service intervals for your vehicle.

Trust the data, not your eye. Follow the oil-change recommendation given in your vehicle ownerā€™s manual or by the motor oil manufacturer.

The only surefire way to determine if the oil has reached the end of its service life is to perform oil analysis.

The easiest ways are to (1) monitor oil life status in the engine info display, (2) monitor engine hours, (3) monitor mileage, (4) monitor driving conditions, and (5) RTFM.

Not many folks here read it apparently.
There is NOTHING about oil or oil changes in the manual. There is NOTHING about oil changes in your info-tainment pages on maint. The only reference to oil is where the dipstick is...how to read it and where the oil filter cap is. They don't even tell you what type of oil or oil filter to use in any literature that jeep provides. You are expected to rely on the "oil life" within the engine monitoring system....then take it to the dealership. At least they put the type of oil it uses on the oil filler cap......probably so the Maint-Tech at the dealership can determine what oil to put in it.
Its is sad that jeep has failed to include this information. Majority of jeep owners are DIY's The manual should have had Oil type, # of quarts needed, Filter type (Mopar) and aftermarket, and recommended oil change intervals.......Hell they should have provided this for ALL the fluids in the jeep.

What you are showing is NOT provided by the dealership or Jeep. Jeep owners should be provided with this information when purchasing the vehicle. We should not have to be downloading it or searching it up on line. Not everyone has the convenience that we do here. Where and how did you get the information. It is NOT in the owners manual. like I said before...all of that SHOULD be included in the owners manual.

Since your providing the information.....Please include the service intervals too

Thanks. and by the way....many JL owners will benefit from the information you are posting.

Frank posted pages copied directly from the owner's manual, provided by FCA/Jeep in the glove compartment of every new vehicle. The service intervals are charted in the manual, too, and in the vehicle's info center diagnostics (oil life remaining). Oh, and the oil type information is imprinted on the oil fill cap in the engine compartment. Just because you're too damn lazy to read it is no excuse to get your panties in a wad.

This forum is sure different from any i have ever been on with all the cross arguing and lots of folks that do not try to help them selves. I look at 4 other vehicle and motor home forums and they are more, informative and less argumentative. Just a observation.

That's boring. WAY more entertaining posting it in a forum.

Wasn't the OP asking more of a personally when do you change and not what are you supposed to do based on the manufacturer?

I never follow the manual. I probably have wasted a lot of money throughout the years on extra oil but I sleep well at night. I always do oil changes early. My grandpa taught me that when I was about six. He said the single best thing you can do for your vehicle is keep her clean and change her oil every 3,000 miles. Well I decided on my own to change that to 5,000 as I figured synthetic oils are a little better than they were in the 70's.

Wish I would have read up on this before I took the JL in today. I just spent the last 20 min removing a quart from the oil/filter change we had done today. This was the first and last time I trust Jeep maintenance to be done properly by the dealer. I even brought up and pointed out with manual in one hand showing that it says 0W20 and 5 quarts and the service receipt in the other showing 5W20 and 6 quarts. Service rep and service worker said it was an issue with their system and that all receipts for Jeeps both jk and jl read the same, and was promised it was only 5 quarts and 0w20 Complete lies. I let the vehicle sit for about an hour and the oil was about an inch above the hash marks on the dip stick. Removed exactly one quart and now we are center hash marks. Iā€™m shocked by the experience today.

The problem here is: (1) FCA released two 2018 Jeep models, JK and JL. Apparently the service system Jeep dealers use doesn't distinguish between them. (2) Service technicians are not trained to properly diagnose, service or repair beyond following a boilerplate template or plugging a diagnostic device into the OBD port. Hands-on mechanical and electrical skills are becoming extinct. This, unfortunately, is commonplace among all motor vehicle manufacturers and dealers.

What does your manual say? In all reality do what your gut says, but you should be fine with changing it at 5K.
Manual says 5,000 miles. I'm getting emails from dealership saying it's due at 3,000 miles. So they are not in agreement.
