This may have been asked before but I can't find it in a search of the Forum, BUT what is the intended purpose of the plastic hood that goes over the backup camera. It's the black piece of plastic that has the T-40 torx lock screw to take it off the spare tire.

Has anyone just tossed it? Is it a sunshade or protector for the camera lens?

Mine is not there anymore. Don't really miss it.

Protection. I had mine off when I got new wheels and realized that a lot of things could hit it. So I added it back on.

I honestly don’t think it does more than that.

It could be useful if a spare tire cover was installed. The spare tire cover would have a hole for the camera and the camera cover would prevent the spare tire cover from flapping out of place and obscuring the lens.

Can you imagine the weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth if someone installed a spare tire cover, with a proper hole for the camera, and it didn't stay in place?
I can't speak for other manufacturers but I have the Mopar cover on my Rubicon and it has a built-in camera cover incorporated into it. When the tire cover is installed, the stock camera cover is set aside.

If you get a Boomerang hard tire cover the shroud has to be removed. It’s probably an aesthetics thing.

I can't speak for the Boomerang hard cover. It's soft, while also requiring removal of the factory camera cover, incorporates its own into the tire cover.

The Boomerang hard covers do as well.
