Took at trip with my 21 yr old son down to PINS for the 1st time in 3 years,. I discovered PINS in 2013 and went multiple times year until the end of 2019 then COVID and lack of a 4x4 for a few years made it a difficult trip to make. Made it down around noon on Friday and as usual the island didn't disappoint . The island has changed a lot on 3 years, wider in some spots, a bit skinnier in others and a some large dune structures that weren't' there before.
We drove down the beach to about mile 23 and fished Friday afternoon catching a lot of whiting and 1 Sheepshead. We had a few trout bites in the surf but couldn't land them. We cooked some steaks and went to bed early. Woke up Saturday to a great sunrise and did a little more fishing before deciding to drive the remaining 37 miles of beach to the jetty. A lot of easy driving but hit some soft deep sand for some long stretches' but the Jeep pushed through without hesitation. It was a great drive and there were a couple stretches' down and back where we went 10 miles without seeing another person
Stayed at the Jetty for a bit then drove north a few miles to have lunch and fish a bit., That is when some rain moved in for a brief shower but the wind was picking up and skies to the south didn't look great. After talking to a few people we passed the consensus was hang out till late afternoon but get off the beach and don't spend the night. Conditions in the gulf were changing and tides were going to be pushing up to the dunes and heavy rain were expected. After talking with my son we made the decision to fish for a few more hours then leave the beach and make the drive back to Dallas after only being there a little more than 24 hours. Better safe than sorry and a video I saw from Bob Hall Pier (about 20 miles north of the entrance to PINS) Sunday morning confirmed we made the right decision. Winds were kicking over 30 MPG and waters was to the dunes and it wasn't even high tide.
Short but great rip, will be heading back in a couple of months but solo next time as my son will be back in west TX at school.
