Do we think this is a good idea? Not the average car for a 16 year old for sure, but this boy is for sure deserving of it. It was either this or a Mercedes but we're worried about that getting keyed (or something (the wife is quite the paranoid freak) ). Ive heard the wrangler is easy to flip which is definitely a concern.

Please feel free to share any opinions or info

Thanks.

I just recently bought my first Jeep ever, and I wouldn't say that they are easy to flip. Unless, of course, you are a 16-year old.

TBH, there's no way I'd give a 16yo a $60K+ vehicle.

Putting that aside, if it were me with $60K to blow on my 16yo, I'd buy him a $40K Jeep (slightly used, couple years old so it's still in good condition, etc), and give him the other $20K for mods/tools, with the caveat that he has to research them all and install them all himself - no shops allowed, aside from mounting tires.

He'll appreciate that $40K Jeep so much more than he would a $60K Jeep after he's wrenched on it for a while, AND he'll learn extremely valuable mechanical skills that will serve him well throughout the rest of his life. AND he can make the Jeep whatever he wants it to be. He'll drive it into the ground and cry when it dies. Plus you won't be worried about it getting keyed.

BONUS: you can help him research, shop for tools, and do the installs. It'll be an awesome bonding experience for the both of you and give you memories that you'll cherish forever. There's nothing quite the same as building something with your own hands, and doing it with your old man is just the icing on the cake.

Also, I say get him both so that when he flips the Jeep he still has the Mercedes. Anything less than that and you’re being selfish I think.

Do you mean flip, as in flip over? Or flip, like re-sell?
Jeeps don’t flip over. Bad Jeep drivers do.
Jeeps do have a great resale though.

I drove my first Jeep (CJ) when I was 12. It was down at the lake on dirt/gravel roads. I loved it. I think a 16 year old can handle a Jeep OK as long as he has had proper training.

My son just turned 19. He is getting my old F150. I could afford to get him a new car, but there is no way considering males do not even begin to get their "adult" brain until around 25 years of age!

Is my son deserving of a new car? Sure. He graduated with a high GPA. Was awarded a scholarship to study Aerospace Engineering, etc... etc... But even though he is a respectful young man he is still just 19 with a lot of swimmers in his balls that make him want to do stupid things in vehicles to impress girls.

Since you asked for advice here it is. I would get him a used gas guzzling truck that is made out of steel. He is young and he will make a stupid mistake and get into a wreck, OR someone else will make a stupid mistake and wreck into him. Either way if you get him a large truck he will essentially be in a tank and will have a better chance of survival. Plus in a gas guzzler he will learn the value of money real fast, unless you plan on buying his gas too.

every single kid i knew growing up that was handed a brand new car abused and destroyed it - the ones that worked to pay for it treated them like gold

its only personal experience but human nature tends to appreciate things (no matter the value) more when they are earned.

If its a status "keeping up with the jones' " on the parents end - then i cant opine on that crap

Don't tell him this, but he's probably a better driver than my wife & is honestly approaching my level. I'm confident he won't flip it, unless of course it's easy to do.

Wow, this has to be the the stupidest post I've read, in a long time. Apparently common sense doesnt run rampant in you.
You should stop playing around and buy "Little Lord Fauntleroy " a Ferrari, give him a $1000 a week allowance, a n unrestricted VISA card, and a place for him to stay on his own. All because he must be really responsible, for a 16 yr old. What the hell could possibly go wrong??

Yeah, sure, right… next I’m sure you’ll probably say something silly like guns don’t kill people; bad people, improper handling and irresponsible gun owners hurt people. Guns scare me just like the all the Jeeps that just randomly flip over like in the rocket league game, I see it happen 5-6 times a day on my way to work. Exactly why ordered a ‘22 wrangler though, flipping over at random is fun.

OP should Definitely go with two Mercedes for his son and a backup Ferrari for when the Mercedes run out of gas so when he just throws them away to get a new one that is gas, he’ll have a backup until the new Mercedes comes in. You know, supply chains and all right now.

that being said… how do you like that Teraflex? I’m debating between that and the Dynatrac. Too many decisions in life. We need more socialism so I can just have ONE lift option and like it. 😁

I like the Teraflex, but I like the AEV Dualsport better! It has much better on-road manners and is super capable off-road. If I had to choose between the two, I’d get the AEV again.

Forget what anyone says about weather you should buy your kid the jeep or not. If you think he is very deserving of it and you can afford it then its your choice how you spend your money. I know kids that abused the vehicle there parents gave them but I also know some kids that were rewarded with a Mercedes because he was doing so well in school getting scholarships and now own multiple dental offices. Jeeps don't need to be treated with respect anyways right? haha

I think the jeep is a fun choice for a young guy. Its not easy to tip either. great for resale too!

Let the kid save up money from his job and buy it himself. Maybe match what he puts up and get him a nice used jeep. It will make a man out of him and teach him how to save and live on a budget. Obviously you are well off if your thinking brand new jeep or Mercedes. Still, make him work for it and earn it. What do you want to get him for college graduation, a lambo?!! Unreal...and don't get pissy about snarky comments , you asked for it.....
