Replacing OEM steering wheel with leather covered steering wheel

I have a 2020 sport that I would like to replace the steering wheel with a leather/carbon one I found on ebay. Anybody attempt this? Any success? It looks as though they take an OEM wheel and cover it with fake carbon and leather looks really nice.

I agree.

The base sport model doesn't have a leather steering wheel, which it seems like the OP owns.

I get that. I was bringing it up in case he can buy an OE steering wheel, instead of that fancy schmanzy one.

My Fiat 124 Spider has a similar steering wheel to that one, with lots of inserts and hard surfaces. It works well on a car that weighs 2,300 lbs and the steering takes only 2.5 turns lock-to-lock.

I doubt all those folds, inserts and hard surfaces will feel right steering a Wrangler.

That's hydrodripped, not real carbon. But looks good, indeed...

Assuming you get a compatible one, it’s very easy.

1. disconnect the battery and let the jeep sit for at least 30 min.
2. Two access trim panel cover things, one on each side on the back side of the wheel. One 10mm bolt behind each. that will release the airbag.
3. There are 3 (if I remember correctly) color coded clips/plugs to remove, plus 2 other wiring harness connectors to fully release the airbag so you can set it out of the way. Take a picture of how the wiring is routed to make re-install easy.
4. One 24mm (I think) bolt holding the wheel to the column. Remove it and the wheel will slide off.
5. reverse steps to install. There should be a groove so the steering wheel will align properly when you reinstall.

Had many cars, this steering wheel feel and leather and thickness is the Holy grail of how it should be.

My understanding is that messing with airbags is not a DIY proposition.

If you are good with your hands you might consider adding a wheelskin cover (wheelskins.com). I have a Sport, not a Sport S, and it has a pretty nice leather wheel.
