2019 Jeep two door Rubicon. Pretty much all the options. 5900 miles.

This was done online:

Carvana offer 36,800
Vroom offer 42,200

Why such a huge difference? The obvious choice is Vroom, but if you look online, what you read ain't too pretty. Anyone have any insights on any of this type of buyback?
I've only had experience with Carvana, and it wasn't good.

Last September, I sold my 2009 Toyota RAV4 in preparation for buying the new Wrangler I'm now driving. Went to the Carvana website and input all the info. They offered me a lowball figure of $2500, "pending inspection in Vernon, TX"

WTH!!?

I'm in a city of over half a million, and they want me to drive 400 miles to a small town of 11000 for an "inspection." I carefully maintain my vehicles and keep them clean, inside and out.

They're nuts.

I put it on Craigslist for $5 and listed it at $7500 and sold it the next day to the first one who drove it.

Carvana? No thanks.

Based upon others getting high Vroom quotes I send in the form for my 2020 Rubicon loaded - sticker price $60,500. With 13k miles on it they offered $45k. No thanks - Wranglers dont lose value that fast.

I tried both of those with my truck, Carmax believe it or not came in 3 grand higher than both.

It all depends on the current demand vs. current inventory that each dealer has at the moment you get your quote. That's why it varies so much, even one hour to the next - Carvana moves so much inventory that you could be competing with 5 other identical vehicles one hour and then they're all sold the next. Thats why I always say - if you get a great offer, lock it in. If you don't, wait a week and try again.

Also, don't try to sell Carvana a car that's more than 6 years old or a truck that's more than 8 years old, you won't get good offers. Unless they are truly exceptional examples or something that's really in demand. They aren't looking for 2009 Toyotas at this point.

Did you actually get $3k better? Interested to know, because I've heard repeatedly that Carmax has high offers upfront in an effort to get you to drive it to their lot where they find things wrong / lower the bid and bet that you've driven far enough or want something on their lot more so you will take the lowered number. You've had a better experience?

Yep. Their online quote thing doesn't work for my truck because I have a Canadian VIN (in the US), so my only option was bringing it in for an APPT. Vroom and Carvana were within $10 of each other and Carmax was $29xx higher than both. I've seen it happen before, but I don't think it's super common. It might just be that my truck configuration was fairly rare spec and very desirable to the right people.

a fellow local jeeper is in the process of selling her 2017 JK Sport to Vroom after i directed her there. she owes about $30k for it and was having ZERO luck trying to sell it for $30k locally. Vroom offered her almost $35k. she said it jumped up by $6k since she checked the month before. so she immediately jumped on that deal! now they are paying her loan off and she's going to walk away with a few grand in her hand. she said she was worried she wouldnt be able to sell it (financial issues), even at a slight loss. now she's way on top.

we're going to sell our low miles 07 suburban. carvana, vroom and carmax all offered low amounts on it. can sell it for way more private party, which we'll do. carmax even said they would just auction it off. none of them want to sell vehicles that old, even if low mileage.

I just sold my wife's 2018 Infiniti QX60 last week to Carmax for $29,000. Vroom offered me $26k and Carvana offered $25k. All were sight unseen appraisals.

I drove it to Carmax, they looked it over, and cut me a cheque for the full 29k. Ordered her a JL Sport S the next day.

Thought I’d share my Vroom story for the sale of my 2021 JLU Rubi. The short story:
- sold it to Vroom for more than I paid for it 18 months ago at $54,000!
- processing took longer than I’d expect (see timeline below), but worth it for $4K more than Carvana or CarMax
- happy with the outcome, would use them again (if not in a rush)

Background:
1/15 - Carvana appraisal - $40,100
4/19 - Carvana appraisal - $50,100
4/19 - CarMax appraisal - $49,000 - had to go into the store
4/19 - Vroom appraisal - $49,500
4/22 - Day before appraisal expires an increase of $500 to $50,000

The final deal:
4/23 - Vroom appraisal - $54,000
4/30 - accepted appraisal, sent in my details
5/7 - requested for more information, the back of my DL
5/12 - paperwork to sign for the sale - a one page doc that needed a signature
5/18 - carrier assigned for pick up
5/25 - picked up
5/27 - check sent by FEDEX
5/28 - check received
