Because it can lead to a total stranger "judging you" which makes the average person feel "uncomfortable". Most consider it too personal of a question for a stranger to ask. Unless you're a close friend, family or spouse, it's really no one's business.

With my generation (boomer) asking how much someone paid for a big item (house/car etc.) was in poor taste. Things have changed. But your neighbor that asked is an imbecile. If I wanted to know what your vehicle cost I would go inside, get online, & figure it out with a high level of accuracy. Figure it out without showing my ass by asking & possibly offending you.
