1 inch spacer required to achieve backspacing for lift kit?

I've decided on the Rock Krawler 3.5" No Limits Mid Arm - now, I'm trying to ensure my wheel/tire selection fits.

Tires: BFG KO2 37x12.5
Wheels: KMC KM229 Beadlock 17x9 (3.5" backspacing)

However - the Rock Krawler lists the recommended backspacing for the Rubicon with 37" tires to be 4.5" (37” Tall Tires – Recommend 4.5” of Back Spacing).

I'd prefer not to use spacers... should I just look at purchasing wheels that have 4.5" backspacing from the factory? What are people's thoughts here?

Less backspacing = more clearance. 3.5” exceeds the minimum requirement by 1”. You’re good.

Thank you - I was interpreting a lower backspacing resulting in the wheel being closer to the suspension/break and thought it'd have to add 1" to achieve 4.5" from mounting.. looks like I have more reading to do :D appreciate it!

Wheel backspacing is the measurement from the hub mounting surface of the wheel to the outermost edge of the wheel. Backspacing is typically measured in inches. More backspacing means the wheels are pulled in closer to the brakes and suspension.

I got 35 ko2s on the stock Rubicon wheels and needed that 1" spacer on a 2 1/2" lift.
Getting the wheels with specific spacing removes the need for the spacer.

Don’t feel bad, it’s very easy to get this backward in your head. The good news is that you’ve got plenty of room for most any suspension that you can think of with no need for spacers.

Where is everyone finding a hub centric 1” spacer? Options seem very limited and when I do find them it states bolts may need to be ground down to fit.

Some OEM wheels have intentions that accommodate protruding studs that will allow thinner spacers to work. Some aftermarket wheels might too.

Perfect, thanks. I will need to check for the indentations. I have a Willys and really like the OEM rims.
