Extremely long time lurker JKU owner here popping in. The only thing that would make me trade my JKU in is a V8 option in the JL. As soon as they started hitting dealer lots I would buy one. Not even joking; so yeah it should be a thing.

They aren't putting a turbo six in a Jeep with more than 500hp. The 6.4 is over 500 (Mopar rates it at 485 but everyone says that's for government reasons and that it is over 500). They need the 6.4 in the Wrangler from factory
If they did that those idiots at FCA would want $70K for the JL.

If Ford can get 470lbs of torque out of a 3.5l V6 with better fuel economy than the less powerful V8, then Jeep would be silly not to try that too.
it's apples and oranges, but hear me out.....

caddy makes the CTS-V, which has the corvette powertrain, including the blown 640 hp v8.
it floats four cylinders on the highway, but that doesn't help a lot with supercharging.
the puppy is freaking expensive to operate, on lots of levels. tops out about 205 mph.

i almost bought one. instead, i bought a CTS-V sport, which is the CTS-V, with an ATS-V
twin turbo 3.6 V6, detuned a smidge to make it better at lower speed.

a little pooter reflash, and it puts out about 465 hp, and is stupid strong with torque. it doesn't
float cylinders, and gets 29 mpg at 85 mph. fastest i've had it was at 2,600' above sea level,
and it was pulling 174 indicated. suspect 185 tops it.

and it was $34,000 cheaper than godzilla. it's two years old, with 85,000 miles, and runs flawlessly.

if you put that engine in a jeep, holy shit. you'd have an orgasm right before you wrapped it around a pole.

people wanna drop a huge engine in a jeep.... that little V6 would just be about perfect.

It sounds like some folks like a V8 and it’s not about performance. It must be the V8 sound or just tradition. The fact is modern V6 engines are powering some of the worlds most exotic cars, the Ford GT and McLaren 720S for example. Both of these are 700+ HP and sound amazing. The Alpha Giulia, top spec, made by FCA, has 505 HP from it’s V6. It’s said to be a Ferrari V8 with 2 cylinders removed.

I would go the turbo V6 route simply for the weight savings plus the low and midrange torque. But then again I’m kind of a performance minded person. A monster V8 does have its own visceral appeal.

The other consideration is, could the Wrangler accept that much power. My JLUR will spin the back tires with the current V6 coming off the mark so a full-time AWD of some kind seems necessary to manage that amount of power.

I don't care about gas mileage so I never use the feature that deactivates cylinders.
Did you disable it? Or does it activate without you even realizing it? It was very subtle on my Ram 1500, and if it wasn't for the "ECO" light I wouldn't have even noticed it.

While I doubt we'll ever really see a factory V8 Wrangler, as that option went away when the YJ came into being, it is fun to Imagine the possibilities. As much as I like the Hemi engines, I'd also like to see a V-8 based on the Pentastar architecture. Much like how the 3.9 Magnum was made by chopping off two cylinders from the 5.2 Magnum, why not make a 4.8 liter V-8 out of the Pentastar? It could easily have a 400 Hp tune based off the 310 Hp the 3.6 has in the Ram 1500.

In reality, I do believe that there is a turbo inline six in the works for FCA's light duty trucks and SUVs to get in on the EcoBoost bandwagon.

In sport mode it is disabled. It's an animal in sport mode. Always a gear down ready to go. It pops and makes all kinds of noise

The 4Runner people are saying the same thing about the current engine configuration. Quite the price hike if you want one. Lexus or Land Cruiser on that side. There are others in the lineup with a V8, but If you want to keep the same off road prowess you are getting a V6.

I think what we can all agree on, is that the Wrangler could use an engine option with a lot more grunt, be it V8 or a TTV6. A 350-400HP / 400+Lbs of torque options would probably sell really well no matter how it's made.

So is there a tune for the pentistar? My solstice factory 4 was 263/263. A $300 tune went 300/340. I know it’s boost but there should be something for the 3.6

There is a 305 Hp tune in the Ram 1500 Pentastar, so I'm pretty sure an ECU tweak can get some extra power out of the motor, but I don't think the warranty will cover it afterwards.

Maybe they should just do a Limited Edition JL and drop a Hellcat engine in there and some special color. I'm sure it would sell quick.

I won't drive a Ford truck solely due to the Ecoboost bs. Give me a 6.2 LS over that all day. Few quick and easy changes and you have much more power and infinitely better sound than anything you'll ever find in the Ecoboost range
