I've had my jlu sport s for close to a year now and I've noticed that I rarely hit 5th gear and almost never 6th. Maybe its my driving habits after driving my 2001 mustang gt 5 speed and my 2015 gt 6 speed but I no longer have them. daily the fastest I drive is 60, maybe I just like the get up if I need it instead of shifting down. just curious of your guys driving habits.

I only see 6th on the interstate when speeding (limit is 60 here). I have a rubicon though. 5th is a grey area for me. I use it on long stretches of 50+, but otherwise max out in 4th.
I plan to regear when I up to 37ā€™s. I might do it before since Iā€™m almost never on the interstate.
Edit: my BRZ will take 6th at 25 to 30 when taking it easy, so definitely an adjustment. I also noticed the Pentastar is quite unhappy under 2k.

I have a Sport S 6MT. I shift into 5th around 55-60 mph. I use 6th when I'm ~67 mph and above. Where I live is pretty flat, so your shift speeds may be significantly different.

I drive around in 4th a lot. Which is fine. 4th is 1:1.

My other stick was a 6MT Mazda3. 1:1 was between 4 and 5, but I routinely shifted to 6th around 40 mph because the car was far lighter and the engine had plenty of torque. The Jeep is heavy and the V6 doesn't really do much until 2k+

Ok good to know you guys are using 4th like I am. yea it does take a good stretch for me to hit 5th and I always run into hills so its almost not worth it haha

I'll use 6th once I hit about 65mph on the freeways down here in Houston, other than that, 5th is about as high as I go so I can keep the rpms at or above 2k.

I donā€™t have a manual so probably shouldnā€™t even reply (a manual isnā€™t offered with the engine I chose). But why does Jeep gear it this way? Must be to squeek out a tiny mpg improvement under the perfect set of conditions? I enjoy manual shifting, but if I couldnā€™t use all the gears at 55-60mph, that would really bug me.

I've got an '18 JLU Sport S with 35's and a 3.5" lift. I only go into 5th or 6th when the prior gear revs to 3k-3.5k RPM. It doesn't matter if it's flat or uphill. If my upshifts fall below 2k, I bog down and have to upshift again. When I had the stock rims and 31" tires, I could upshift early with no hesitation or lugging.

When I hyper-mile, I upshift as quickly as possible on flat or downhill roads and keep the rev's under 2k, so I go to 6th quickly.

Total speculation here, but it may allow 4LO when moving short distances between obstacles rather than stopping and going back to 4HI. Iā€™ve not spent much time on anything but forest roads yet.

I use 6th quite a bit, but the lower gearing in the Rubicon makes that possible. I'm guessing 5th in my Rubicon is closer to 4th in the sport with the 3.42 rear.

Like most others, i hardly see 6th. Just a bit unnecessary. I have a ā€˜19 sport s and never really leave 4th, unless im 65+

For my Rubicon, 5th at about 50, 6th about 65. Uphill on a highway usually can only use 4th from 50 on up.

I use a lot of 4th, 5th above 60 depending on the wind.

FWIW had a nice tailwind coming back from Austin last weekend and got like 25 mpg in 6th.

But yea, wind and grade decide.

Rubicon, 37s, regeared to 5.13 - I get to sixth regularly. Didnā€™t use sixth very much prior to that, except on the interstates.

Wow... I'm at sea level. JL sport, 33s on stock gears. I use 6th all the time. Shift into 6th right around 60, no problems at all cruising 65 mph at 1700 to 1800 RPM. Sometimes I grab 5th to climb a hill, use 4th if I really gotta pass someone.

Just curious, are you guys running 4 doors, hard tops, and a lot of aftermarket steel?
