One week ago I got my dealer to perform the TSB 08-074-20 upgrade to the new steering gear. They also did an alignment as part of the service. I have a 2018 JL Rubicon Unlimited and for the last two years the excessive play on-center has been frustrating. I also didn’t feel comfortable driving it at higher highway speeds due to the steering. The sloppy steering and constant corrections were frustrating.

The new gear box makes a noticeable difference but it’s still a Jeep—it still got looser steering and I had hoped for a bigger change. I realize it’s not going to steer like a sports car but I was hoping for a more direct steering feel. Does anyone else have the new gear box? Thoughts on the change to steering?

There is already a huge thread with like 300 pages. Go over there and you can read until you are dead on this subject. Plenty have swapped it out and have all sorts of different experiences.

Hey so i got tsb for new gear box done last in november and although it does track better the steering still has a dead spot and has more play than i like. I feel it more the faster I go. Do you have same issue?

I agree there’s still a dead spot but nowhere near as much play as before. I think the fact that it gets worse at speed is physics, as opposed to a sign of a problem.

yes I have taken to dealer and they say it drives like a hero. But the same dealer I drove a new Joy and they do not have dead spot at any speeds. Steering tight. I also asked them to reprogram my computer maybe the setup is messed and a reset would work but nope they refuse to even try that. I mean how hard can that be? Also I asked what about the electrical steering pump, maybe that’s giving losing connection and nope they won’t even try that either. I mean come on what is warranty for?

Yes I contacted a specialist and have a case number. I am asking that dealer print me out a option report showing the actual programming update so I can see on paper if the programming in deed is correct. This way at least I can go to next step. With them just saying it’s updated means nothing as I have read other people on forum say same thing about dealer saying it’s updated and then they go to another and it’s actually not. So please help in getting my dealer to print me a options report showing the what my vehicle programming is so I can match to tsb bulletin. I am even willing to pay for the time it takes to plug into my vehicle and print the report.

do you know what your toe is set at? If not in enough they will go out more and change feel of steering. I like between 1/8-1/4 total toe in. Had my box out in last night. They aligned. I can tell to isn’t where I want it already. Just have to find to go redo. Box feels tight though.
