Hi chevymitchell,
We completely understand how concerning this must be. I have noted this in your current case for your Case Specialist to see. Please send us a private message if you need any further assistance with this!

I have the exact same issue with my power steering going out. I have taken it to two different dealerships and have had a case with @JeepCares without success. Please help me get the new steering box authorized. This is a death trap without it.

Has there been any progress finding out what is wrong? I am having the same issue. The dealer can not reproduce it so they will not do anything about it. They applied the software update but that did not help.
I'm in the same boat as you. They can't replicate it and won't fix the steering issue. Two dealerships and a @JeepCares case manager that won't get in touch with me and still have the issue.

Anyone that has been experiencing this and continues to drive it is braver than me. I'd quit driving it after one event. I don't have 9 lives.

I don't know what else to do. I love my jeep but not after this whole experience. Truly amazing that the dealership released my jeep after not doing anything and the steering went out again and no one is making any moves to have it fixed...Very disappointed right now with Jeep's customer service and Jeep Cares.

I’ve experienced locked-up steering every winter with the JL from being bone stock to heavily-modified with steering components. In my case it’s almost certainly the steering box. I even had a dealer diagnose the problem as a steering box issue. However, I ran into several more problems along the way with this specific dealership in Denver.

These near-death experiences as a daily driver and weekend warrior, have panicked me into leaving the Jeep in the garage and opting for an incapable sedan. Please do your part in reporting your experience to the NHTSA. It’s time FCA is held accountable.

You may also view my other post about my warranty repair process that has had significant hurdles. It began with having a new steering box ready for install and stopped with the dealer being “uncomfortable” installing it.

I'll definitely fill out the NHSTA form as this is insane that it's not a recall. How many people have to get into accidents for them to fix this?

Has anyone been in an accident because of it?

I've luckily been able to avoid accidents when the steering goes in/out because i have learned when it usually goes in and out and don't make any turns, but I really worry about having to turn quickly when it goes out or comes back in. This is a major safety issue that jeep seems to either 1. not have a solution for or 2. they are reluctant to admit it's an issue.

It's your decision, of course. But, I'd make a choice to either pursue legal action against FCA, Lemon law it for a refund, or put my money into fixing it with a PSE system. But I would not willingly risk my well being or that of friends and family over the economics of a known vehicle problem.

Is everyone who is experiencing this still running the aluminum steering box? Is anyone having this happen with the new cast iron box?

@chevymitchell did you get a resolution on yours.

Havent had rhe issue with the new steel one. Had it all the time with my old aluminum one, that got replaced twice and it never went away. On first start up in a cold morning the steel one will have that lock feeling to it just once but never comes back until after sitting all night and the next cold morning. The aluminum box is definitely the problem, but i think the pump is suspect too

Perhaps re-introducing the death wobble will solve the steering issues. Come to think of it, I don't recall ever reading about steering issues in Ford Pintos.

I did, yes. They ended up replacing the pump, intermediate shaft, lines, gearbox, drag link, and tie rod. Basically, everything except the steering wheel and then it was fixed.
