I hated having to dig in high desert Cali soil - mostly Caliche. Had to use a hammer and chisel at times, like I said to folks, they land the space shuttle and aircraft on it. Does lend itself for very neat trenches.

When I lived in Tucson, they used to say that the invention of concrete was really just finding a way to soften caliche.
