Changed out my cabin filter today at 11,300 miles and I was surprised to see how bad it was. I have maybe done 6 quick 2 hour off road trips, otherwise just driving around Los Angeles and one 1k mile round trip when I visited family in northern california.

This thing is filthy. Literally covered in dust and I don't see how it would be effective at all for another 9k miles. I never use my AC either or have air blowing through the vents. I have my windows down 99% of the time.

I popped in the KN washable one just now since I figure it will pay for itself after I wash it a few times.

Just thought I would share since I would personally probably recommend changing every 10k miles after seeing this today.

That recommendation is for on road driving. A few off road trips and that is to be expected.

Within the last few months, Calif. had the bout of multiple wild fires, that went on and on.... lots of soot, ash and such,. in the air, for what weeks.. That alone would cause ALL California and surrounding area vehicles to see cabin air filters a muck and engine air filters.

One of my residences is in the Bay area and my vehicle there need edan earlier then usual cabin air fitter AND engine air filter change.

DO check you engine air filter..

My engine filter was changed around 7k miles. I bought the afe dry washable filter and have already washed it 4k miles later at 11k miles.

Definitely when off roading, maintenance should be done at earlier intervals than recommended.

In NC we need to change it after the heavy pollen. May-June works well for me.

You missed my point it seems.. you want to zero in on off roading.... yes, that is part of it but the soot/ ash is also....

no I got your point. I didn't say anything against it. Just added that when offroading people should also do these things more frequently than recommended. But makes sense the fires could have mucked these up a little faster as well.

Or simply remove it completely. Roughly half of the vehicles out there don't even have the option of a cabin filter. Really it's just adding another thing that needs to be replaced.

The K$N should be last alot longer before it gets dirty. Your lungs will be doing the filtering.
