This all reminds me of the old TJ drive train rattle, which I went through numerous rounds with the dealer and Chrysler. The end result was a statement from the dealership & factory "Vehicle functions as designed". Be very meticulous about your document keeping on this matter.
I’m gonna make sure to get copies of everything, if there is anything else I can do in terms of documentation please let me know!

These tailgates are made of a unique magnesium alloy. I wonder if that is just a manufacturing defect that no one noticed and got painted over.

It is hard to believe that if it was repaired, someone would leave such glaring evidence.

Record any phone calls. This way if it goes South (and it probably won't), and you decide to park it at the dealership and hand them the keys, you will at least have all the documentation on what let up to your actions.

Inside of the tailgate is magnesium and outside shell is aluminum. Service advisor just confirmed it’s a known defect particularly on lighter colors. I dropped of the Jeep to have the noise taken care of. If it’s still bothering me when I pick it up I’ll ask what’s the process to have it fixed. I just don’t want to be stuck bumming rides/in a rental for 2+ weeks

-Ask them to order a color matched tailgate from the factory to replace the defective one. What you show in the photo is totally unacceptable. That is what I would do. My tailgate has no defects like that.
-Hopefully on the first try the dealership can locate and repair the noise from the rear. After you pick it up and if it is still there document with high quality videos multiple times so you can escalate to corporate to get it resolved properly.

Two minor items that the dealership should be able to handle.

I didn’t know having them order a color matched tail get from the factory was an option. This is perfect as I can still have a Jeep for however ridiculous amount of time they might take to get something like that(hopefully not)
I’m gonna request this when I pick it up

I would demand it as they already admitted it was defective. Research and list the pros to this such as factory paint, appropriate rust protection, it never should have passed quality control, is what you paid for, etc. Corporate Jeep would be silly not to agree with providing you a non-defective tailgate.

I’m gonna contact Jeep cares with the issue and maybe I’ll get someone who can help me this time. Thanks for the help man that’s a great idea

I've had this thing for 200 miles and I think something is up unfortunately. I'm hearing a shuttering/clunking noise when doing a U-turn at slow speeds, it seems to be coming from the rear end.
I uploaded a short clip so you guys can hear what I'm talking about. you can't really hear it unless you hold the speaker up close to your ear or have headphones on but once you hear it you'll know what I'm talking about.

here's me doing donuts in my backyard to recreate the noise.
you can really hear it at 13 seconds

anyone know what this could be?

I also have what looks like a paint defect in the rear tailgate, does anyone else have this? Would it be better to take it to the dealership i bought it at or would the closest Jeep dealership be okay?

Im not sure if you have had this sorted out or not yet but i believe the tailgate is simply a casting issue. My tailgate has got divots like this as well, (I cannot take pics ATM though because it is at the dealership for the repaint on the hinges.) It is only on the inner side though which is the Magnesium side. I know it looks a little bit iffy but much like other cast'd metals, they are just pock marks. The new tailgate will most likely have these as well.

As far as that sound. It is possible the E Locker is malfunctioning on you. I believe it is a common issue with the rear diffs locking and unlocking on people when they shouldnt be. It could be a simple module or a full axle replacement. Any dealer will gladly take care of it..... as long as it is a notable Jeep dealer that is.

Thanks so much for the reply, they just texted me that they’re taking it for a spin now and will let me know what they find. Dealership told me that the best bet would be to contact Chrysler regarding the tailgate. I contacted Jeep cares for the second time and actually gave me a case # and set me up with a phone appointment with a “specialist”. I’ll keep you guys updated. Hopefully they can help me out. As long as it’s structurally sound then I’ll get over it

Sorry, wasn't thinking the inside panels were magnesium. Knew outside was aluminum.

they just gave me a call and I got the famous dealership response of “ we weren’t able to hear anything” they told me to come in tomorrow morning and take a trip with the manager so I can recreate the noise for them. I should have an update for you guys tomorrow morning.

Thanks for you opinion man, I was starting to think I was overthinking all of this. I beat the crap out of old 2 door jk rubicon on 37s and never heard a squeak from her. Now I’m dealing with all this at only 250 miles!
JK’s were tough as nails.

OP - if you’re going to have them fix your tailgate paint, also check the hinge and see if it missed like my 21 JLUR... should just get it all done at the same time.
