Some non Jeepers seriously think they are invincible in a Snow Storm when in 4WD or AWD

A good friend of mine, an NRA-certified instructor with a collection of medals from Camp Perry, reluctantly traded his Mazda sedan for a Subaru wagon because the former was functionally useless in snow. He has nothing but praise for the Subaru's capability in inclement weather. A night and day difference as he describes it.

My boy also enjoys tweaking what he calls "the traditional Subaru constituency" with a well-placed decal or two on the rear glass. (His actual description is less sanitized, and may not bear repeating here. ;) ) Anyway, said decals reflect his interest in the shooting arts, which I agree isn't something one normally sees on that brand of vehicle.
Brilliantly engineered response. Here, the best way to tweak the traditional Subaru constituency is a Trump sticker, but a Glock sticker would work well too.

Funny. My sons, one of whom is currently deployed, get constant ribbing from friends who ask them why they are dating girls and wearing boots instead of Birkenstocks. . :)

My kids are more frugal and more sensible then I am. They aren’t interested In off-road adventures, but they ski, hunt, fish, climb, and surf. They wanted trouble-free vehicles that would carry gear and get them where they want to go. I’d prefer to have them in Suburbans, because when it comes to surviving crashes the one with the most lug nuts wins, but they couldn’t afford $70,000 gas guzzlers, and Subarus fare well for smaller vehicles, so I recommended them. (Surprisingly, Subarus even hold up well in a gun fight. It’s very hard to kill a Subaru).

With the exception of “dude-piloted-snowboarder-wagons” driving like morons, I can’t remember ever rescuing a stranded Subaru that was less than twenty years old, but SUVs of every flavor litter our highways when real winter hits.

That’s a great one!

That was 1100 years ago. Anything in, say, the last two hundred years?
List of Chinese contributions in the last 200 years to this world:

1. Cheap, fake and unreliable electronics that may have had multiple copyright infringements from capable places like USA, EU and Japan.

2. Bullying their Asian neighbors over the South China Sea, the border with India and Senkaku islands.

3. Suppressing and killing their own citizens esp in Tibet and Xinjiang.

4. Spying on other nations via Huawei.

5. Slowly breaking agreements over the autonomy of Hong Kong for 50 years when the British handed over HK in 1997.

6. And of course COVID 19.

When I read Chinese history, I think the People of China have been thru HELL in the last 200 years. The Japanese have done some of the worst acts of war in China during World War 2 (Google "Rape of Nanking"). When the Japanese were done, Mao Zedong got millions of civilians killed during his "Great Leap Foreward". Their government massacred innocents in Tiannanmen Square in the 80s. These days the sentiment against the Chinese is very high due to COVID 19. The people have been thru hell due to their government. I just wonder when will enough be enough and these people finally grab the pitchforks and start taking action against this government that has ruined China's reputation worldwide.

Not gonna happen. Tiannanmen Square was just a tiny glimpse of the Chinese commitment to maintaining absolute control. There’s a lot more history to read, but the country spans an area roughly equivalent in size to the US, with ethnically and culturally diverse populations that struggle to even understand each other. There are many, many distinct languages, each spoken by millions of Chinese that can’t understand the others. That challenge is compounded by a government that is in control of all the major information and communication systems and monitoring the others. Dissent is identified quickly and punished decisively.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing pitchforks in China anytime soon, but I expect them to be reappearing in Portland and Seattle on a regular basis from now on. Those populations have learned that they can destroy private property, assault people, and burn the cities with impunity anytime they become unsatisfied with a sports score, legislative action, or anything else that happens somewhere in the world.

Maybe Premier Xi can send a few of his trusted Military aides to Portland at our behest? Some of these really nice gentlemen who built fortresses in Portland may "disappear" overnight and then be seen some months later as they have been "reformed" in a secret prison?

Was dropping my mom off at work early morning today at around 5:30 here on Long Island. It was blinding Snow, Sleet with significant ground accumulations, a biting wind and even worst wind chills. On top of that it is still fully dark out.

I get on the single lane road that goes straight to her work place. The Road is coated in a thick layer of Snow with a very thin layer of Sleet underneath. Speed Limit is 40MPH (65 kmph for my fellow non American or non British Jeepers). I put my JLUR in 4Hi and take it easy going at about 30 to 35MPH (50 to about 55kmph). Besides me, there are some Pickup Trucks who are doing the same speed as me (a Tacoma, a 1500, a Titan and a Jeep Gladiator). Usually we can go about 50MPH on that road (80 kmph).

While I am driving, this little prick in a brand new Audi A4 AWD station wagon is rapidly closing the gap behind me and then starts tail gating in blinding snow! He had the gall to start flickering his beams at me and asking me to speed up. When the road opened up and became a two lane, he cuts me and two Pickup Trucks off while honking his horn. Just near my mom's work place, the douche ends up spinning out of control and is stuck in a snow bank. I drop my mom off and then go back just five minutes later The guy is out there waiting for someone to tow him out.

While I wanted to pull down my window and flip him off, I felt bad and stopped; as did a fella in a JKU Sahara who looked like a gentleman in his early to mid 50s. The JKU Sahara owner had a tow rope on him and the two of us helped get the guy out of the snow bank. It had become obvious to us that the poor soul has no idea how to even hook up a tow rope. So I put helped put the Rope on the Audi while the JKU Sahara owner connected to his Jeep and got him out. The guy looked just extremely embarrassed as he know I am same JLU Rubicon owner he had cut off just some minutes ago. Afterwards I called him out for cutting me off in front of the JKU Sahara owner; who begrudgingly told him that having an AWD in a Luxury German Car does not make you invincible. He told him that if Jeeps and heavier vehicles are taking it easy, he always fails to understand why people in their Audis or BMWs or AWD Nissans think they are God.

Don't know about others but I have also experienced the same. Our fellow Jeepers and many Pickup Truck drivers tend to still take it very easy in the Snow as we know what can happen. It is always that one idiot in a BWM or Mercedes or Audi or Lexus that thinks they are God in the Snow with their computer controlled AWD system. This is despite a Jeep or a Pickup Truck being a lot more capable in inclement weather versus these AWD cars. Wonder when these folks will learn???

Sidenote: The JLU Factory LED Headlamps are an absolute disaster in the Snow as there is significant reflection from the surface. Hope I get used to that over time. Otherwise, I love my Jeep!
I’ve seen 4WD pickup trucks think they’re invincible on ice and then lose it, too. This doesn’t have to do with the brand of vehicle - stupidity has no bounds.

I‘m old, so I’m probably a generation behind. I think of China as an innovation thief that steals everything and then makes vastly inferior copies of whatever they steal. That’s been my experience with tools, motorcycles, clothing, and almost everything they sell at Walmart, but no stereotype is fair.

The Wall was a remarkable achievement, but I‘ve never heard anybody describe China as an engineering innovator. What would you say China’s top five technological innovations/contributions have been?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_inventions

I agree that most of the good stuff happened A LONG time ago, but China definitely deserves a spot in history as a great innovator for what they have accomplished. In recent decades they've discovered that it's a lot easier and more profitable to just copy other ideas and sell them cheaper.

Years ago I lived in northern Idaho. We had some pretty good snow there. One morning, in the dark, I was driving down the hill to work in my 67 C101 Commando with Les Schwab re-cap studded snow tires, no chains, the road was white and I was in some loose snow as well. I came upon a log truck and an American Motors Eagle (awd) that had slipped off the road a bit into the ditch. I stopped, backed up the hill and asked them if they wanted me to call someone on my handheld radio (it was linked to local emergency networks). Their reply was no, they had called, they just wanted to know how the heck I was able to stop easily on the grade and actually back up the hill so easily. I loved that Jeep, the 5.88's, the Les Scwab studded snow tires, they were very sticky. I could carefully go through snow up to the bumper.

Great thought.

That would present the Portland majority with quite the philosophical conflict: they love the idea of socialism/communism, but they want to be able to destroy property and injure others with impunity. How would they view a communist eliminating their rioters? :CWL:

On topic: About twenty percent of our workforce drives three quarter ton, six-pack, four-wheel-drive pickup trucks with studs. They go anywhere as long as there is plenty of weight in the bed over the rear tires. Unloaded four-wheel drive pickups with heavy-lugged mud tires are particularly lousy on slick roads. The Toyo MT tires are very popular out here due to their aggressive appearance. A truck running those things on ice is like a fat kid trying to run up a polished concrete slope wearing football cleats.

Years ago, I purchased a sano Chevrolet K1500 with mud terrain tires thereon. I hated them. They were noisy, and had funny tread wear despite my best attentions. I couldn't wait until they were worn to the point that they could be replaced with my favorite all-season rubber, the superlative Michelin LTX.

I'm usually too thrifty to invest in tire replacement, and/or other capital costs, in advance of having to do so (my so-called "2/32nds rule".) Only twice in recent memory have I broken this rule, both times due to tire issues:

-When replacing the Kumho Solus tires that were on my wife's CR-V at the time of purchase. They were easily the most craptacular tire that I've ever experienced, full stop. Substandard performance in anything less than sunny & dry road conditions. Michelin LTX to the rescue. Again.

-I also removed a set of Shinko DOT knobbies (the well-known 804/805 front-rear combination) from my Suzuki DR650, well before treadwear would have required it. Odd wear on the front tire started too soon, even when allowing that this is an otherwise normal condition with such tires. The quasi-paddle tread design on the rear tire allowed way too much lateral movement in loose pack, with no forewarning, ever. Time to go! The Metzler Karoo 3s that replaced them are on the bike now. They're a bit better, although their road manners don't live up to the promise of their ad copy. Looks like I'll find my way back to the Michelin Anakees at some point.

I’ve had nothing but the best experiences with Michelin tires. We replaced the Cherokee’s factory tires with Michelin’s at 40,000 miles. They provide fantastic traction and they still look and feel new after almost 15,000 miles. I ran the Michelin Pilot Roads on two prior sport touring motorcycles, and I’ve run the Anakees on enduros. All expensive, and all worth it. With the potential exception of the Grabbers I installed on the Rubicon a while back, my experience with tires is you get what you pay for. The Grabbers may be in that category too (I’m hoping not), but I don’t have enough experience with them to have an opinion yet.

As a Jeep and and Audi owner myself, both are very capable of bad weather driving conditions, but get a big dummie behind the wheel and no matter what kind of vehicle it wont save their ass.

I'm Kraig from Western Washington, Lacey. I Approve this message. With the influx of new people from all over the planet to Western Washington, it's just gotten worse.
