This is my first post here. It's my first post because I've not had much time with my JL.

Within a week of buying a certified pre-owned 2018 Sahara it died. I was driving down the highway when all power was lost, the dash started displaying every possible malfunction warning and I barely made it to the side of the interstate where I sat with my wife and 2-year-old son without even my 4-way emergency flashers working! It was an incredibly scary and dangerous experience.

I had it towed back to the dealership from where I purchased it and it's been there since. That was 6 weeks ago!!! Since then it has sat at the dealership, leaving me with nothing but frustration and a car payment.

Initially the tech thought it was a body control module, after replacing that didn't work, they said it required an ignition control module to pair with the new BCM. After that didn't work they told me the replacement BCM was defective and they needed to swap it again. After that didn't work they said it could be a wiring harness, but it turned out to not be that either.

When the shop threw up their hands, they opened what's called a "Star Case". That entails the local technician emailing an engineer at FCA who responds within 24-48 hours. The local technician will try the step suggested by the engineer, email the result back, and within another 24-48 hours will get the next step. The technician will then try turning the screw the other way and 24-48 hours later will come the next suggestion. That went on for a couple of weeks, when they apparently escalated it to a "Level 2" engineer for more back and forth.

The local technician tells me he barely touches my car. He gets a response every day or two, does what it says, reports back, and then waits another day or two for the next response. He's in the same position as he's been for more than a month, not even knowing what's wrong with the car, and this tedious process FCA has for diagnosing problems with their vehicles has taken me from regretting my decision to outright hating the Jeep brand.

In addition to the "Star Case" the service department opened, I called FCA and got assigned a Case Manager who I follow up with every few days but who hasn't really been able to do much in moving the process along.

Notably, before this one I had a 2014 JKU, immediately before that a 2007 JKU and a couple decades ago I had a TJ. I have been very loyal to Jeep, so it really pains me that the latest iteration of the Wrangler is anything but the durable and reliable car I expected and is instead such a complicated mess that even their own technicians can't fix them.

I'm reaching out to the community to ask what more I can possibly do and to see if you agree that the JL is the worst Jeep ever.

My Jeep has been to the dealer to get fixed 6 times. A new problem revealed itself yesterday, so it needs to go back again. Half the frustration is how terrible Jeep service departments are. Is the JL the worst ever? Hard to say, because theres literally hundreds of thousands of happy JL owners who havent had a problem yet.

fat_head,
I notice we both have 2018s. Maybe the first year of our body style had issues that were corrected in subsequent years. I had a 2007, which was the first year of the JK and drove it 158K miles before getting a 2014. Never an issue.
6 weeks and not even a clue of what's wrong with it seems a bit outrageous. Maybe the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL is the worst jeep ever made?

I've owned every generation of the Wrangler since the YJ and I still argue the early model JKs were the worst ever made. The ones I owned all had major problems well before 10,000 miles. However, the service techs employed by Chrysler have managed to become increasingly worthless throughout the years.

This sounds like a battery issue...

...and what a surprise. They didn't even bother starting there.

Jeepless but still a fan.
I've owned lots of TJ's, an XJ, and my JL. I haven't had any issues with the JL yet, but certainly wont church em up if they happen. Fit and finish, performance and construction so far with my JL is every bit as good as the Hondas I used to work on, though I got out of the industry in 2010. Unfortunately, there's a number of issues that seem to me more prevalent in the first runs of 2018 which seem to be less in the 2020s and beyond.

I always like to wait two years after a brand new model is introduced just so that the manufacturer can figure out the bugs. 2018 and 2019s both had issues with the Clutch for example plus the ESS. Both issues were largely resolved by the time 2020 Model Rolled out in July 2019. The 2020 fixed the old steering issue that had been bugging not just 2018-2020 JLs but JKs and TJs also.

I always used that two year rule and so far that rule has worked good for me. Hoping that streak stays unbroken with my 2020 JLUR.

The farther we progress into technology the better recall and account we have with issues.

I promise you they all had these issues that needed to get worked out. We just have a better way to record the proof now.

Lemon that thing and start over. You’ll get through the process much faster and with a lot less aggravation than waiting for months on end for them to accidentally stumble upon something that fixes it when they don’t even know what’s wrong with it or how find out what’s wrong.

I would second the Lemon suggestion and buy either a new Jeep or something else. After Jeep, Toyotas are my second favorite as nothing can beat the reliability of a Toyota IMHO esp their Pickup Trucks or the body on frame SUVs such as a 4Runner or a Sequoia (sorry Jeep but Toyota has you beat in the reliability department). The downside is that a Toyota is not as fun to drive versus a Wrangler.

@Ronnie772 : what are the Lemon Laws in the state of Florida?

Chocolate Thunder, I don't think I can Lemon Law a pre-owned vehicle in my state, also I have 20" wheels, Katzkin interior and a total of $4000 in mods I purchased for this car, so I'd be eating a lot more than the purchase price if I had to get out of the deal.

in 2 years you're going to hear the same thing said about the XE's that the OP said about the JL non-hybrids.

You couldn't PAY ME to acquire an XE until 2022 at the earliest. Never buy the 1st gen anything. They should've called the 2018 JLs a Beta test.

I'm not trying to shit on you, OP, you've every right to be pissed and disillusioned, especially for what these things cost.

The problem is; as soon as I file they will stop working on the car and it'll sit until it goes through the legal process (which can take months). In the meantime I'll have to buy another car so I'll have something to drive, while I'm still making payments on the broken Jeep. The upside will come to me in the long run, but the temporary downside and headache is what I'm trying to avoid. I wish I could just ship it to the engineers so they can fix it in person.

@JeepCares : Please help this person out and elevate if needed to a higher level in Michigan!
