Was Jeep just sandbagging the Diesel GVWR number? It just seems ludicrous to think you can only SAFELY add 700 lbs of weight to the stock vehicle . . . it just seems too ridiculous to believe.

Is there some regulatory reason why Jeep would have to place such a low value?

It used to be combined GAWR, now in addition to GAWR, it is braking, safety features, stability, durability, etc. In short determined through testing.
ok braking

Well, here's a follow-up...

I wanted to double check the weight from the dump so I ran it across the CAT certified scales at the truck stop. Conditions were nearly identical...fuel, me and the dog.

It came in at 5460 lbs.

With the door sticker GWR at 6100 lbs, ya better weigh your lunch before packing for a long trip...LOL

Honestly, the diesel has so much poop, the rig does not FEEL heavy. Additionally, pulling a trailer near the 3500 lb limit with a sway bar and EQ bars, it feels great and the truck out-weighs the trailer substantially.

Thank you for posting this. It is very helpful. Do you have the hard or soft top?

Look how many expedition rigs are running around that are fully modded out. They must be well over.

I've loaded up my JLURD twice. Once with laminate flooring. Once with bags of top soil. I was impressed with the diesel and breaking.

Apple,
The 200 lb. difference between the two rigs is curious to say the least...and yours has a winch! It seems my weigh in conditions were the same as yours, ie. 2020 Rubicon, diesel, hard top. full of fuel/DEF, me (220lb) and the dog (10lb) sans the winch...5460lbs

I do have an ARB compressor installed but other than that, the rig is stock. I'd thought you would be heavier because of the winch.

Curious...

AppleJacks, were you inside the vehicle when it was on the scales? How much additional gear was inside as well. Since you have a winch installed, I would have expected a slightly heavier reading than Plongson.

Was not inside. Not much stuff added (<50 lbs). Mopar winch guard, steel bumper of course, work backpack (laptop etc), 2 car seats, bulletproof phone mounts, ham radio / antenna. Nothing too special!

So you're measured weight is very close to Plongson's . . . not surprisingly.

It still amazes me that we can only carry an additional ~600 lbs before we exceed our LEGAL/AUTHORIZED weight carrying capacity.

I've been pleased with the brake system performance to date and I would have no concerns that the brake system could handle an additional 1K lbs. The vehicle does not feel heavy while driving, as the engine does an excellent job accelerating when needed. I simply do not understand why Jeep was compelled to put an overall GVWR at 6,100lbs.

I haven't felt quite as good about the brakes, but I'm coming from a 1,000 lb lighter 2-door.

This Jeep is probably the heaviest vehicle I've owned (slightly heavier than my 2004 Lincoln Aviator), but I've driven plenty of full-sized trucks and the braking system on the Jeep is better than most. I simply have no concerns about braking performance at the moment, it certainly is better than my old Aviator.

I'm wondering if a higher GVWR rating would have placed the Jeep into commercial vehicle territory that could have had regulatory implications . . .

I haven't noticed any braking issues either...but I have been driving a 2003 Ram 2500 Cummins for the last 17 years...so I may not be the best judge. To me it brakes like a truck.

I don't think it is an issue associated with commercial vehicle rating. The 2020 Ram Eco diesel is about 300 lbs heavier and a Mercedes GL is 400+lbs heavier.

From the little I have been able to find the GVWR is determined by testing, based on issues such as braking, dynamic stability, durability, handling etc.

This issue is undoubtedly my biggest pet peeve with this vehicle as I will undoubtedly load this vehicle up beyond the GVWR at some point, and I'll bet some folks have already done so.

What will be the consequence of upgrading body armor, upsizing wheels and tires to 37+ inches, roof racks, tents, reserve fuel tanks, PLUS a full compliment of passengers, tools, and coolers? Factor in 350 lbs of tongue weight from a trailer and you've easily added 1200 lbs and exceeded the GVWR by 600+ lbs. My bet is that the Jeep COULD handle it, but what do I know?
