Just found this formula online for calculating horsepower loss due to elevation change.


  • HP Loss = (elevation x 0.03 x horsepower @ sea level)/1000

If that's correct and applicable to our application, then that would be 55.8hp loss from Magnusson's posted numbers at sealevel of 372 rear wheel hp., equaling 316.2 hp. (assuming 5000 ft elevation difference)

Stock number would be 34.5 hp loss from 230 (at rear wheels) = 195.5hp @ 5000 ft elevation difference

That calculates out at about a 61% increase which is similar to their gains at sea level.

Still want that high altitude pulley!

Yes, having lived at 5000+ ft for decades, 3% per 1000 ft of altitude is the rule of thumb for power loss. Another rule of thumb is to reduce the SC pulley diameter 1% per 1000 ft to compensate. A 5" pulley becomes a 4.75" pulley. (100% - (1% X 5)) X 5" = 4.75" And the circumference of a circle (the pulley) is 3.14 times the diameter. So a 5% smaller pulley advances the SC belt 15.7% further per revolution which is the same as the percentage loss of power at 5000 ft.

Anyway, I've been waiting for the Edelbrock SC for the JL. Now that it's out, I'm going to wait a little longer for the first tune revision and then pull the trigger. Around $6200 with the tune, so about the same as the Magnuson.

I didn’t realize the Edelbrock was out now. Is it the TVS1320 like the JK?

They called me a couple of days ago as I was on "the list". I asked for more details, they said they are forthcoming. They also said it will be up on their website in a few days. The first "batch" is already sold out. More are expected in the early part of November.

Did they ever mention if it is CARB legal?

Any reasons for going with Edelbrock vs Magnuson?
I've used Edelbrock products since the '70s (yes, I'm old) and never had any problems. I've also read about setup/tune issues with Magnuson on this forum. The Edelbrock system seems a little more conservative than the Magnuson, so a little less strain on the driveline. An extra 100hp is enough for me.

Running as of this morning. I've only driven it a few miles however I'm pleased at this point. As I've seen mentioned a couple of times, the throttle does feel a little lazy off idle but not significantly more than it was stock. Of the 7 manual vehicles I've owned, the throttle/clutch control on this one was already the most finicky.

Now to put some more miles on it.

8.5 sec according to a TAZER on a stock (other than the SC) 20 JLR 6 spd. I didn't do a 0-60 prior to the install so this isn't going to tell us much
Did you do the install yourself? If at a shop which one? I’m also in Colorado.

I haven’t decided to pull the trigger yet. I know I am capable of doing the install but maintaining some warranty through Magnuson does have some appeal.

I did it myself. Completely agree with you about the warranty, hopefully all remains well with it.

I put a Banks turbo on a TJ several years ago and this one was substantially easier. The only thing I didn't like was the placement of the ambient air temp sensor. There's no way it'll read properly under the hood so I extended the harness to put it back in the stock location.
