Could be that the internals are steel and therefore the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between steel and aluminum could have caused looseness in the original assembly. Aluminum expands more with temperature than steels.

I can't tell if my steering is loose or it's just how SFA vehicles are.
Solid front axles have an element of steering play. But having owned 8 prior Wranglers, some of the JLs I test drive felt way too loose.

My 2020 Recon with a build date 6/20 has the new Steering Gear Box, and the steering feel is great.

It would be interesting to see when the new steering gear went onto the assembly line?

-Steven
Did you have the TsB done and the dealer? I can almost promise you it has the old steering gear in it.

Is this true, the 2021’s also getting cast iron steering knuckles vs the 2018-20 aluminum ones?

No TSB for me. I found the sticker on the Jeep as I was looking under it. It's the new part number.

Perhaps.

IIRC, JL weighs 200 lbs less than JK, despite being larger, having a bigger transmission and more “stuff”. They had to remove the weight somehow.
Where did you see 200 lbs? It looks like less than 100 lbs according to FCA spec sheets.

Still impressive given its physically larger size

I went out and checked my 2020 Sport S. I ordered it May 21 and picked it up July 2, so I was assuming it had a June, 2020 build date. The steering box is the gray aluminum unit, and the sticker was hanging on by a thread. Looks like it's dated June 19, 2020.

@Redrockjk I need to clear this up as I Do Not have steering gear #68507569AA on my 2020 Recon.

I have steering gear #68250506AE. This is the AE version.

Sorry to have 'muddied the waters' so to speak!

so you have the aluminum steering box?

And youve been saying your steering is spot on. THIS is the case for most jeep owners. I have never, ever, had any steering issues with my 2019

Yes, mine is the aluminum box and the steering is spot on.

I believe the new steel steering gear will be what Jeep is using as the replacement.

Mine's not broke, so leaving it alone...thank goodness!

Yeah same here. But following this issue just in case something goes wrong along the road.

Honestly, my Jeep drives just fine. Being a member of this forum has made me paranoid so I'm always checking it, but I've never had a complaint or noticed anything funny with the steering.

My other car is a Jaguar XK, so, sure if I hop out of that and into the Jeep there is a noticeable difference, but really I have zero complaints about my Jeep so far (except how stupidly difficult it is to engage 4WD...) ;-)
