Hi everyone, just looking at two different OEM side step and I'm opening any suggestion: Plastic Running Board or Black Tubular Steps. which one is much more durable? I don't think I'll drive my baby conquer Rubicon trail, anyways thanks for any advice.

A lot of people donā€™t like the Sahara steps (lower pic), but Iā€™ve had them on my JKs and now my JL; they are tough as nails.

They protect the sides of your Jeep from water splash, flying gravel, and from dings in parking lots from opening doors and aimless shopping carts. Think of them as side bumpers; thatā€™s essentially what they are.

One time they even saved the entire side of my 2015 JLU Sahara from hitting a tree on a particularly difficult trail, while Rubicons with stock rock rails had their sides and mirrors damaged.

You can probably find Sahara steps on Craigslist for $50/pair.

You bet. Part number is 82215164.

Thereā€™s a whole bunch of listings on eBay ranging from $140-$175/pair, free shipping.

Good luck.

I like my tubular steps, but theyā€™re definitely not solid enough for any sort of off roading. Theyā€™re just a step up for kids. They donā€™t get as close to the fender as the Sahara style running boards but they block 99% of rocks.

I donā€™t personally like the look of the plastic Sahara step. It just looks like diapers to me.

so, if it were me, i suggest that you buy some honkinā€˜ bit of metal in the shape you like with the features you like and bolt that bad boy on.

The Stock Sahara steps are JUNK, as slippery as snot when wet. Also where they are positioned they are not useful as a step and makes it very awkward if you do use them as a step. I found it easier to jjust stop over them however often getting my pant leg dirty as they dragged across the step.

Get a drop step way more functional and better looking as well
Here is my Sahara with the drop steps. In fact I get more compliments on the steps than any other mod...

It looks great, did you install it yourself?

I'm a big fan of frame mounted sliders, but I might actually do the Rubicon trail, lol. That said, I installed some LoD Destroyer sliders. They are legit sliders, with a step at each door and I can use a Hi-Lift on them. Probably more than you asked for, but the plastic steps and the tubulars are garbage for anything more that a mall crawler. Drop steps are functional in that regard as well, but I would have them ripped off or I'd be hung up way too much with them (yes...I rock crawl). If your not going off-road, consider something more substantial than anything plastic, please!

I installed the Mopar tubulars. I needed a step for my younger kiddos and these fit the bill. They also protect against door dings, and do a good job blocking the majority of gravel that K02s slingshot at the door hinges. No issues with corrosion and easy to install. Now...donā€™t except these to function as rock rails /sliders. Also, they donā€™t cover up the unsightly pinch seam like other aftermarket products (OEM rock rails and the performance rails do obscure the pinch seam).

I plan to upgrade at some point, but some of the offerings that I like seem to have issues with corrosion. Good luck.
