I guess I have been lucky. The jeep only has 7k miles on it, ready for first oil change. The oil is clean. The engine is not using oil. The way I broke in the engine was as a daily driver, however, I drive 55 miles one way to work and back going from 6,200 feet elevation to sea level and back. 95% of the drive is open freeway, so the engine broke in nicely. As far as DEF usage goes, I have used 2.5 gallons for about 5k miles. That is in par with the GC diesel which has a 10 gallon DEF tank. It is, in my humble opinion, critical to break in the engine correctly or there will be problems. Stop and go use is NOT how to break it in. Just my 2 cents.

Wouldn't that kill it?

All it is is Urea, a.k.a. liquid nitrogen. You'd have to dilute it about 50/50 though.
