Well, not exactly.

The Pentastar 3.6L spec reads exactly the same way the EcoDiesel 3.0L spec reads in the manual. "Under no circumstances should you ever exceed 10,000 miles" on an oil change cycle. If you go by the oil life monitor on the dash, both engines will typically get to 0-5% life remaining at 8,000 miles. So there is zero added oil life range with the diesel.

I just changed the oil in my EcoDiesel a couple days ago, at 4,228 miles. First one, so I did it early. The oil life monitor was already down to 46%.

Doing it myself at home for the absolute least cost possible, the Pentastar was $25 for synthetic oil that meets spec and a Mopar filter. The EcoDiesel is $100 for synthetic oil that meets spec and a Mopar filter. That's a 300% increase in basic maintenance cost for the diesel. Oh but wait...every second oil change with the diesel also requires a new fuel filter at a minimum cost of $40 so that pushes you to 460% more cost than the Pentastar.

It's true that we've hashed this to death. But a guy should NEVER buy a diesel to save money. You will spend more money, not save any.
The trouble with making absolute claims beyond death and taxes is youā€™re typically setting yourself up to be proven wrong. I pay $0.20/gallon less than 87 for diesel and have done the math based on a direct comparison of my ā€˜18 3.6 and ā€˜20 3.0 driving the same roads in the same conditions...I start saving money around 60,000 miles taking into account oil costs, fuel additive costs, DEF etc. Oh and 9 quarts of MS-12991 Pennzoil Platinum 5w-40 go for $75 on amazon and walmart. I didnā€™t buy my 3.0 to save money, but that doesnā€™t change the fact that I will. Iā€™m well aware that Iā€™m the minority of folks who will, but thatā€™s the rub with words like ā€œneverā€ isnā€™t it?

I would love to see that math.

Where are you? Most places Iā€™ve been over the last few years diesel runs 25-55 cents higher than 87 octane gasoline. This totally negates the improved fuel economy.

37ā€ tires. Once youā€™ve there or above, the mileage difference between the diesel and everything else is big. Getting the diesel isnā€™t about saving money for me but 40-50% better economy is still awesome

Thanks for giving me an excuse to plug in the numbers again. Current fuel price delta using my 3.0ā€™s 24mpg average compared to prior 15mpg pays for the engine option and maintenance items closer to 70,000 miles assuming the first four oil changes are covered by Jeep wave.

Who cares what diesel costs...calculate the value of torque and there is no comparison.
Gas engines are for lawn mowers, motorcycles and race cars.

Spark Plugs are offensive and should be banned.

Thanks JLURD. I'm buying for torque, not savings, but, as you point out, perhaps there is a cake-and-eat-it-too situation here. And...we may find that the diesels hold a disproportionately good resale value. Time will tell.

Totally agree. I'm an old-schooler who "over changes" his oil. Still the cheapest insurance for your engine. Based on WXman's info on oil life monitor, why push it to the absolute limit? 0-5% left with 2,000 miles to go, and still driving your $60K vehicle - really?

As an aside, I find it humorous that some owners stress themselves out to get the best discount when purchasing their Jeep, and then turn around and cheap out on oil changes.

BTW, WXman, I'm not refering to you, just commenting on the info that you objectively provided.
Yeah you can spend a LOT on oil if you want. Some of those "luxury" oils run $15 or more per quart. But the Valvoline MST 5W40 is around $6.50 per quart online and it's stamped MS-12991. I get the oil filter from dieselfiltersonline.com for $45 bucks. So I figure I'm into it for about $100 to do an oil and filter change at home with this EcoDiesel and keeping FCA specs intact.

On the Pentastar, I was getting a jug of 0W20 or 5W30 synthetic for $15 at Walmart, and the Mopar filter for $9 at Walmart. Big difference. I could do 4 oil changes on the P-star for the price of 1 on the diesel.

Does anyone know the size of the diesels oil plug? Iā€™m looking at different drain valve replacements and need the size. Thanks!

I've had multiple diesels since 2005(Duramax) so I had to get a 3.0 Jeep once they came out. I'm undecided on when I'll do the first oil change but I've always done it around 3,000 on the first one then every 5-7k depending on how I was using the truck; hauling, idling hours, etc. I work out of my truck so I put more hours on my oil than miles. My Jeep will be different as it is a secondary vehicle and will be used for around town, joy riding, and trail riding. I've been very pleased with the 3.0 so far!

Not to hijack the thread but I also change my fuel filter on my trucks about every 10,000 miles so that's something I guess I'll be doing every one to two oil changes on the Jeep as well. I haven't even looked for(or priced) it yet.

Have you looked at the Fumoto?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a used oil catcher/container? I'm used to dealing with only 5 quarts and I'd like to upsize/upgrade given the greater oil capacity of the diesel. I was looking at these two, although I'm not sure how much clearance I'll have under the Jeep with 2" lift. I'll be using a Fumoto valve draining through a 1/4" plastic tube so the opening in the catch container can be smallish.
