This isn't cheap, but it swings out of the way of the gate.My only issue with a hitch-mounted rack is blocking the ability to open the gate, though i'll have the roof off soon for the summer.

i do this with a large Yeti mountain bike with 29β wheels. It fits well and of course is super secure. We used to put bikes inside our 4Runner. They were stored upright with fork mounts (https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Bike-Block-Fork-Mount/dp/B01B50X6OU) fastened to a 2x4. Haven't gotten around to try it in the JL.
dropper not even neededIf you do not want a spare tire rack, a hitch mount rack with either a Yakima Backswing or Rockymount swingout adapter will allow you to open the gate. For inside options, you could either lay the bike down or make a fork mount Solution. I am able to fit 2 bikes inside using fork mounts.
Agree with your opinionJust put it in the back. The spare tires ones that I have seen to date are blah and most end up blocking the camera.
I have to drop mine all the way down, the better halfβs not at all. For reference, I have a Fuel EX 19.5β and the rear tire is between the front seats with the handlebars near the back window. It is a big bike.dropper not even needed
OMG this was HILARIOUS!!! I needed that laugh today!!!Since there are lots of cyclists on this thread, if any of you watch pro racing, you should love this. Stage 4 was just posted.

Which ski rack do you have? I'm currently putting my skis inside between the seats. But at 184 cm they are real close to the windshield due to it being a 2 door. And Mr. Dog doesn't like the invasion of his space in the backIf you get a hitch installed, you can get this rack from Quadratec: https://www.quadratec.com/p/quadratec/2-bike-folding-bike-rack
It can be folded down with the bike on the rack to be able to open the tailgate. I have this for my ski rack and it works great.
I have the Thule Tram rack. No complaints!Which ski rack do you have? I'm currently putting my skis inside between the seats. But at 184 cm they are real close to the windshield due to it being a 2 door. And Mr. Dog doesn't like the invasion of his space in the back
Looks like a nice set up. Do you keep that 2x4 permanently installed? This is how I am carrying my bikes. I build something like this for all of my vehicles so that I can carry the bikes inside the vehicle. I used angle iron to attach to a 2x4 which is then bolted down to the trunk tie downs.
Thx! LOL, I just built the bike rack last week. It is only held in by the 2 tie down bolts, so it is easy to remove.Looks like a nice set up. Do you keep that 2x4 permanently installed?
